In 1925 Chamber of Commerce Secretary, Charles E. Lee of Sanger, petitioned then president, Calvin Coolidge to designate the General Grant Tree in Kings Canyon National Park as "The Nation's Christmas Tree". Over 2,000 years old and the third largest living thing on earth, the General Grant Tree was so designated April, 1926. In 1949, the U.S. Post Office officially recognized Sanger as the "The Nation's Christmas Tree City". Each year, on the second Sunday in December, The Sanger Chamber of Commerce leads a caravan of celebrants to the base of the giant tree for a ceremony honoring the nation's war dead, and to honor the Christmas tradition. This annual pilgrimage has come to be known as the "Trek to the Tree", and is attended by thousands from around the world.
The Sanger Chamber of Commerce will celebrate the 82nd Annual Trek to the Tree on December 9th , 2007. Those wishing to participate in this landmark event may reserve a space on one of the Chamber's comfortable tour buses. Some of these reservations include a festive holiday buffet brunch at the Montecito-Sequoia Lodge, while others include a holiday buffet dinner at the Montecito Sequoia Lodge following the Trek ceremony.
In addition to the annual Trek, the Sanger Chamber collorates with the Sanger Unified School District to provide a special school year trek. Every child in the district, during his third grade year, meets the great tree up close and personal. Knowing their little town has "ownership" of this giant builds immeasurable community pride.
