Community Service Officer
DEFINITION:
A non-sworn classification under general supervision on an assigned shift performs non-critical law enforcement
task (i.e. duties not requiring a sworn peace officer). Participates in crime prevention programs, traffic control,
grant programs, some types of clerical work, non-emergency calls for service and other related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
The community Service Officer will be responsible for various tasks in the Police Department.
- Under an assigned shift, the CSO compiles statistics and prepares written reports required by local and
State agencies.
- CSO duties will include the maintenance and record keeping of the evidence/property room, including the
storing and releasing of property as directed.
- The CSO will be responsible for the delivery of evidence to State and local agencies as necessary, as
well as the service of subpoenas to individuals and the delivery of the same to governmental agencies.
- The CSO will also assist in the efforts of crime prevention through the formulation of neighborhood
and business watch programs and the preparation and presentation of public awareness programs.
- The CSO will be given field assignments, which may or may not require written reports. Examples include
but are not limited to the following; preliminary and follow-up investigations involving missing persons,
property damage, non-hazardous disturbances, public assistance calls, abandoned vehicle abatement,
Vandalism.
- CSO's shall not be responsible for , nor assigned, task relative to the immediate apprehension of
suspects or known criminals.
